“Oh help, oh no, it’s a Gruffalo!”

The Gruffalo, a famous children’s story by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has been a long running stage show for a few years now touring around the world. The book is a favourite in our household so I was really keen to take Missy Moo along to see it.

The stage adaption follows the same story as the book; the journey of a hungry mouse looking for a nut to eat in the deep dark wood. The mouse encounters a fox, owl and a snake while strolling through the woods before finally coming face to face with a Gruffalo!

The book to stage transition was great, with a few songs and audience interaction added in to keep the kids entertained for the entire hour long show.

What I found really clever (although I’m ashamed to admit it took me nearly 45 minutes to work it out), is that there are only three cast members in The Gruffalo show. There’s the mouse, a narrator/gruffalo, and the fox/owl/snake/other narrator. The transition from character to character was seamless (or at least it totally fooled me), and there was terrific acting by all three members of the cast.

The show had lots of little jokes, no scary bits, and eye catching costumes so it would be perfect for toddlers through to lower primary aged children. I’d give the show a 10/10, and highly recommend you get tickets to see The Gruffalo on stage when it comes to your home town…. it was fantastic!
