Grab your wheels, its time to hoon! The Casey Safety Village is a mini village in Cranbourne, predominantly used by kinders, schools and childcare centres to learn about road safety. Luckily though, it is also open for limited days to the general public every school holidays, so I was keen to check it out.
So I can’t speak for the kinder/school programs, but I’ll tell you how it all worked for the school holiday program.
The sessions run from 10-2pm, and booking ahead is recommended. During the day there are a variety of activities for kids to do, or they can just cruise around the village on their bikes, trikes or scooters practicing the road rules.
Around the village track you will find crossings, fuel stops, bridges, traffic lights and a few buildings to explore.
There are some optional safety demonstrations running throughout the day that might interest school aged kids. Some on during our visit included:
- bike maintenance
- safety in the water (presented by YMCA)
- fire safety in the home
There were also a few other activities too, such as badge making and a colouring in table.
Kids are encouraged to bring their own set of wheels, but you can hire bikes and helmets too if you don’t own them/can’t easily transport them.
We visited with three children ranging from nearly 2 to nearly 4. They all did great! The recommended age for visiting is up to age 12.
Here’s a little video to show a bit more of the village….
Things you need to know…
- The current price is $6.50 per child, with extra costs if you are hiring equipment.
- There was a coffee van on site
- A BBQ was running on the day
- No baby changing facilities
- BYO picnic rug and/or chairs. There’s a few chairs around but not many
We had a great day in the sunshine at The Casey Safety Village and will probably make this a regular spot to visit every school holidays, as Missy Moo had a great time.
